Never surfed before?
Then this is for you
Wakesurfing is the one towed watersport where the vast majority of people are standing within the hour. Here is how a first session goes, minute by minute.
How a first session runs
Fifteen minutes before. Meet at the Crans harbour pontoon. You change, pick a vest in your size, and we run the safety briefing: how to fall (curled up, never head first), how to signal you want to stop, and where not to put your hands climbing back on board.
The first five minutes on the water. The boat idles out of the harbour and we head offshore — regulations require 300 metres from the shore, which takes about three minutes. We fill the ballast on the way.
Your first run. You get in the water, board on, rope in hand. The boat pulls gently, you stay on your knees on the board, and you stand only when you feel steady. Nine people out of ten are up on the first or second try.
The rope. This is the moment. Once standing, we walk you forward into the pocket until the rope goes slack — and then you let it go. You are surfing.
The rest of the hour. We rotate between riders, five to ten minutes each, so everyone recovers between runs. Over an hour, each person rides two or three times.
What to know before you come
- You must be able to swim. A vest is compulsory, but it does not replace being able to move in the water.
- No particular fitness required. Wakesurfing asks nothing of your arms or your cardio: it is balance, not strength.
- From roughly age 8, if the child swims well and actually wants to. We carry boards and vests in their size.
- Bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen. Everything else is provided, wetsuits included when the water is still cold.
- Sunglasses get lost. Strap them on, or leave them on board.
How many minutes for a first time
Take 15 minutes. Enough to stand up, throw the rope back and feel the wave, without ending up cooked. Learning needs short, repeated runs: you ride five minutes, recover while the others go, then head out again.
