Wakesurfing on Lake Geneva

The most accessible discipline on the lake, and by far the most addictive. Rope released, carried by the wave, at 18 km/h and three metres off the transom.

What it actually is

Wakesurfing means surfing the wave the boat creates behind it. You start with the rope in hand, just long enough to stand, then throw it back: from there it is surfing, with no tow, driven only by the slope of the wave. The boat runs at roughly 18 km/h — half wakeboard speed — and you stay three metres off the transom.

That relative slowness changes everything. Falls are soft, you are back on the board in seconds, and you can hold a conversation with the people on board while riding. It is what makes this the only towed watersport we can seriously offer to someone who has never done anything.

Why the wave matters more than the rider

A boat not built for this throws a short wave that collapses, forcing you to pump constantly just to stay in the pocket. A properly ballasted Axis T22 gives more than a metre of usable slope: you hold position without effort, which frees all your attention for learning where to stand.

Surf Gate II also flips the wave from port to starboard without stopping or moving passengers around. In practice, a regular and a goofy rider can swap every three minutes.

How long before you stand up

Most beginners are up within twenty minutes and have released the rope before the first hour is out. The tipping point is not physical, it is postural: you have to accept shifting your weight onto the back foot, which fights every instinct. Your pilot will keep saying it until it clicks.

If you have never surfed, take the First Session: same boat, but the format is built around learning.

The other disciplines

Wakeboard

High tow, a crisp wake, and a transom you eventually clear. More physical than wakesurfing, and more spectacular.

Wakefoil

A wing underwater, thirty centimetres of air under the board, and complete silence. The strangest discipline on the lake — and the least fussy about chop.

The lake is flat tonight.

Late-afternoon slots go first, especially from May to August. Booking takes two minutes and confirmation is immediate.
